Na starym uniwersytecie
jest stan wojenny. Dla mnie okupacja
zaczęła się w domu; teraz jest w miejscu,
ale w takim miejscu, gdzie tylko
niebieskie pająki znajdą
człowieka. Dużo krwi tu się lało.
A teraz co? Babol z nosa czeka
na wygody haftowanej chustki.

At the old part of the university
there is a state of martial law. My occupation
started at home, now it’s here,
but in the place where only
blue spiders can find a person.
A lot of blood was spilled here.
And now what? Eager, my nose drips waiting
for the comfort of an embroidered handkerchief.

Peter Burzyński earned a PhD in creative writing at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He holds a BA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, an MFA in poetry from The New School, and an MA in Polish literature from Columbia University. He works as the book center manager at Woodland Pattern Book Center in Milwaukee. Burzyński is the translator of Martyna Buliżańska’s This Is My Earth (New American Press, 2019) and the author of the chapbook A Year Alone inside of Woodland Pattern (Adjunct Press, 2022). He is the son of immigrants who call him on the phone every day.
